Moving from Knowing to Doing
How Leaders Turn Insight into Measurable Results
Podcast Version: Turning Insight into Action
Listen to this 6-minute episode to discover how to build a cadence that transforms plans into reality.
Article Summary
Leaders rarely suffer from a knowledge deficit. We’ve read the books, attended the off-sites, and seen the dashboards. The real gap is between what we know and what actually happens in the flow of a busy week. As Donald Fleming likes to say: “Clarity without cadence is just a wish.” Cadence is where change becomes real—one ritual, one behavior, one decision at a time.
This article offers a practical path to move from knowing to doing in 90 days—grounded in research and brought to life with tools from the M360 ecosystem: the LPR – Leadership, Productivity & Results program, the M360+ app (with the new Habit Tracker), and M360meet (the real-time Meeting Cost Calculator). I’ll also share a short client story from Pascal Dubois, executive coach and my business partner, to keep things human and true to the field.
The Knowing-Doing Gap is Real—and Predictable
Two decades of management research have shown that organizations don’t fail for lack of information; they stall because knowledge doesn’t translate into consistent action. Jeffrey Pfeffer & Robert Sutton call this the Knowing-Doing Gap—a pattern of over-talking, under-testing, and mistaking presentations for progress.
Why does this happen?
- Talk replaces trial. Debating “the right model” feels productive but delays learning from small experiments.
- Internal theatrics. We reward elegant decks more than simple, repeatable behaviors.
- Fear of mistakes. Teams avoid action because early missteps are visible and political.
The antidote isn’t another memo—it’s a system that makes the next useful action effortless and visible.
What Science Says About Turning Intent into Action
Three robust findings matter for leaders:
- Habits wire in with repetition and cues. In a landmark study, Phillippa Lally and colleagues found that everyday habits move toward automaticity over weeks, with a median of ~66 days (range 18–254). Translation: frequency beats intensity.
- “If-Then” plans (Implementation Intentions) boost follow-through. Peter Gollwitzer’s meta-analyses show medium-to-large effects on goal attainment when people specify when, where, and how they’ll act.
- Work is noisy; meetings consume attention. Microsoft’s Work Trend Index highlights that the heaviest meeting users spend ~7.5 hours/week in meetings—and overall, employees spend most of their time communicating rather than creating.
Put simply: repetition + if-then plans + protected focus time = behavior change that sticks.
From Knowing to Doing in 90 Days (The M360 Way)
Below is a field-tested cadence we deploy with leadership teams through our LPR program, supported by M360+ and M360meet.
- Set One Outcome That Matters (Weeks 0–1): Define one 90-day outcome tied to strategy and customers.
- Translate to Weekly Behaviors (Weeks 1–2): For each Key Result, define one weekly behavior per owner (e.g., “call 5 lapsed accounts every Tuesday 9:00–10:00”).
- Protect the Focus Time (Weekly): Use M360meet before every standing meeting to see the real-time cost.
- Run a 15-Minute Cadence (Weekly): Progress, Obstacle, Adjustment, First Step.
- Close the Loop with People & Culture (Monthly): Use M360 Compass to align Key Responsibilities with results.
Teams don’t need more willpower. They need fewer maybes and more If-Then defaults.
- Pascal Dubois, Executive Coach
Leaders don’t rise to the level of their plans; they fall to the cadence of their week. The bridge from knowing to doing is built from small, scheduled, repeatable actions—not slogans.
